William (Bill) Mayo

William (Bill) Mayo 82, a loving and devoted husband, step-father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and loving friend passed away at Stephenville Senior Care Center Friday, December 9, 2011. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, December 12, 2011 at the Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dan Murray officiating. Burial will follow at Pilot Knob Cemetery in Erath County. Visitation will be Sunday, 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Funeral Home. Bill was born June 21, 1929 in Pilot Knob Community in Erath County to the late Robert and Dorothy Norris Mayo. He married Margie Smith on December 22, 1958. She preceded him in death on April 8, 1998. He then married Peggy Tidwell Roberts on February 6, 1999 in Stephenville. He was a retired Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving 20 years that included three wars, and then continued working 13 years for the Navy Civil Service in San Diego, CA. He attended Junior College studying Market Management. Bill returned to Stephenville in 1980 to care for his aging mother. He was very outgoing and loved serving the Lord. He was a member of the First Baptist Church serving as a Deacon, member of the Chapel Class and the Prime Time Choir. On his first trip to the Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, NM., he met Peggy and they both started to travel . They went on many cruises as well as traveling all over the United States on bus tours. Bill served as a president of the Stephenville Senior Travel Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years Peggy; two step-sons, Charles Roberts and wife Kim of Iredell, Ronnie Roberts of Stephenville; granddaughters, Amanda Ford; Sandra and Danny Kelly; great-grandchildren, Rhett and Laine Kelly and Rachel Ford; brother Douglas Mayo; sisters Jeri Stone and Lavada Allison; nieces, nephews and many close friends. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Mayo and a sister, Dee Gardner. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials may be made to Pilot Knob Cemetery Association, First Baptist Church, or to the American Cancer Foundation or Treatment Center.
