Virginia Bond

November 27, 1923 — October 9, 2013

Virginia Bond, long time music teacher in Stephenville for 65 years, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013 in Stephenville. Funeral service for Virginia will be held Saturday, 10:00 AM at Stephenville First Baptist Church with Terry Price officiating. Virginia was born on November 27, 1923 to the late Jack and Annie Carroll Bond in Dublin, TX. As a girl she took, at the insistence of her mother, piano lessons which she loved. She graduated from Dublin High School and then went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Tarleton State. Virginia then pursued and earned her Masters degree in music from the University of North Texas. Virginia received many distinguished awards during her long career. She was inducted into the Jack Harvey Academy of Exemplary Teachers in 1999, Stephenville's educator of the year in 1983-1984 and was honored to have Stephenville's School Auditorium named in her honor in 1997. Virginia was named Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council's patron of the year in 2002. The first Key to the city of Stephenville was awarded to her and that day designated as "Virginia Bond Day". After 65 years as an elementary music teacher, Virginia received a standing ovation from the some 500 attendees. Superintendent Dr. Darrell Floyd asked how many people in the audience - or their children or grandchildren - had sat in Miss Bond's classes; a full three-fourths of them stood. Virginia touched many, many lives of children through her dedication to education and music. She was a member of Stephenville First Baptist Church. Virginia is survived by cousins, Patricia McClanahan, Robert Gray, Richard Phillips, Don Phillips; special friends Joy Jones and George Miltenberger and Jaeayne and Fred Crabtree; many dear friends and relatives and past students and fellow teachers. Memorials may be made to the Virginia Bond Scholarship Fund, C/O Interbank 150 N. Harbin Dr. Stephenville, Texas 76401
