Verna Pearl Watson Hancock

Verna Pearl Watson Hancock passed away on Monday, September 19, 2011 at the age of 89. She was born May 4, 1922 to Earnest C. and Minnie Pearl (Bucchus) Watson in Menard, TX. Verna accomplished much in her life, attending school in Menard and Stephenville, TX. She worked for the United States Government at the Pentagon building and went on to graduate from nursing school in Corpus Christi, TX. From there, Verna pursued a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Texas, and spent much of her life as a nurse providing love and care to many. She married Bill Hancock on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1946, and they retired to Menard where they loved living on the San Saba River. Verna was an active member of the Menard Episcopal Church, Menard Library & Garden Club, Friends of Fort McKavitt, Menard Historical Society, and Menard Country Club. Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hancock, son David, and grandson Heath Smith. She is survived by her daughter Donna (Loring) Laven, sons Dale and Jason (Amber) Hancock, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Bluefoord G. (Katie) Hancock, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. A memorial service will be held at the Menard Episcopal Church in Menard, TX on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at West End Cemetery in Stephenville, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Menard Public Library.
