Vera Mae Howell Allen was born in Dublin, Texas to Bernie Clayton and Lera Octavia (Flippin) Howell on December 25, 1936. She left this earthly world on February 7, 2025. She was 88 years old. Vera grew up in Proctor, Texas and attended Comanche High School. She is survived by her children, Lori Brooks Jaquess (David), Dr. Lisa Brooks Gonzales (Daniel), Mark Brooks (Ruperto), Terry Allen (Joyce), Keith Allen (Emily), and LaTonia Allen Hohweiller (Marvin). Her surviving grandchildren are Brooke Stripling, Shay Stripling, Marcus Trevor Stripling, Garet Lowe, Clayton Lowe, Whitman Lowe, Ross Allen, Chris Allen, Michael Dale Allen, Mandy Allen Jalamo, Barbie Allen Sloan, Cory Hohweiller, Eric Hohweiller and Jarrod Hohweiller. She is survived by many wonderful great grandchildren who love and adore her. She is also survived by three beloved nieces, Cindy Golliday, Rhonda Camacho, and Gina Vandiver, as well as a special family friend, Kelly Stripling.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Billy Dale Allen; her first child, Hope Brooks; her sister, Jo Ann Howell Walker Williamson; and numerous nephews, cousins and other family members.
Vera was a wonderful homemaker and seamstress with extraordinary culinary skills. In her early career she worked as a telephone operator. She worked many years as a hairstylist owning her own beauty shop in Stephenville and later as a medication aide in the Stephenville area. She and her late husband, Dale, worked tirelessly on their small farm and developing a vineyard in the Lingleville area.
Vera’s presence brought warmth and comfort to everyone who knew her. She will be remembered for the love she shared, the lessons she taught, the grace she showed and the legacy she leaves behind. Focusing on her family and faith brought her great joy and happiness. She was a member of Harvey Baptist Church.
While she will be deeply missed, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known her and especially those that called her Mother, Granny, Aunt and friend.
