Velma Laverne Chew

Velma Laverne Chew Feb.4, 1924 ~ June 23, 2015 Velma Laverne Chew, 91, of Stephenville, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015 in Stephenville. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, June 26, 2015 at the Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2 pm Friday before the service at the funeral home. Velma was born on February 4, 1924 in Johnsville, Texas to the late Curtis and Annie Elizabeth Cox Burks. She married the love of her life, Hubert Chew on September 27, 1940 and he preceded her in death on December 15, 1985. Velma previously lived in San Angelo, moving back to Erath County in 2001. She was a homemaker raising three daughters and helping to raise many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Velma was a longtime member of Hillcrest Church of Christ. Survivors include her twin sister, Thelma Fern Sikes of Alice; daughters, Patsy Dianne Chew Fowler and husband Sam of Austin, Sandra Sue Ponder and husband Wylie of Blanco, and Mitzi Lynne Chew Lustgraaf of Stephenville; grandchildren, Roderick Fowler, Holleigh Mullowney, Jodianna Doyle, Allisha Ponder, Rebecca Ponder, William Ponder, and Maritza Ponder, Philip Ryan, Nicole Kizilarmut, Fawn Ryan, Danielle Knight, and Stephani Lustgraaf; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Larry Virge Witt II; and 10 brothers and sisters. Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Church of Christ, or Alzheimer's Association P.O.
