Peggy Sue May, 87, was called home on November 10, 2019 in Kyle, Texas. She was born to the late Houston and Nellie Wilkins on July 25, 1932 in Ft. Worth, Texas. She was the youngest of two children, her older sister Wanda Murphy preceding her in death.
Peggy's compassion for people led her to obtain her Nursing degree at St. Paul's School of Nursing in Dallas, Texas. She then went on to join the United States Air Force in 1962, a decision that would prove to be the biggest adventure of her life. Peggy became a flight nurse and a very well respected member of the armed forces, retiring in 1982 as a heavily decorated full bird colonel. Her distinguished military career allowed her to travel the world and presented her with some very unique opportunities, including personally caring for the Queen of Libya and being chosen to give a television interview on the Art Linkletter Show, highlighting the importance of nurses in the armed forces.
Her life was nothing short of exciting, even more so after meeting the love of her life, the late James O. May, on base in the Azores Islands of Portugal in 1971. They quickly fell in love and were married in Jame's hometown of Moultrie, Georgia later that year. James and Peggy lived a full life together, traveling the world and turning many strangers into family. They had a special place in their hearts for Alaska, but eventually settled down and retired at their Texas ranch, Topaz II. Peggy was a lover of card games, puzzles and laughter. Her smile could light up a room. She was a loving and caring person, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Peggy is survived by her three step children, Timothy and wife Sherry May, Bill May, Tami Crabb; her grandchildren, Lynn Ross, Shelly Griffin, Kimberly Kohutek, Michael Crabb, Thomas May and Katrina May; seven great grandchildren; her beloved niece Linda Murphy and nephews; and her daughters in love Robin Gardner and Stephanie Chaney.
Family, friends and others whose lives Peggy touched are invited to attend her memorial service that will be held at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on September 28th, 2020 at 11:30 am. Per her request, a portion of Peggy's ashes will be laid to rest along side her husband's, James O. May, with full military honors.
