Sidney D. (Sid) Whitman, 96, of Stephenville, died Saturday, July 20, 2013, in Stephenville Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, July 22nd at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Howard Martin officiating. Following the chapel services the Stephenville American Legion Post #240 members will conduct Military graveside services at West End Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday at the funeral home. Sid was born on January 24, 1917, in Indian Creek Community in Erath County, to the late Steven C. and Irene Croft Whitman. He graduated from Stephenville High School in 1936, and received his degree in 1939 from Tarleton State College in Industrial Arts. He married Helen Fern Hassler on February 17, 1944 in Stephenville. She preceded him in death on March 9, 2007. Sid entered WWII in the Army Air Force in 1940, and flew 32 missions on a B24 Bomber in Europe. He was discharged in August 1945 as a Tech/Sgt, and has received numerous medals for his service. Sid was a Master Electrician since 1945, a member of the Stephenville American Legion Post #240, and was a member of the Stephenville First United Methodist Church. Sid loved the local American Legion Post; attending meetings, parades and memorial events. He also loved hunting and fishing, woodworking, Texas Rangers baseball, and the love of his life in attending his grandchildren's activities. Sid was a lifelong resident of Stephenville. Sid is survived by two sons, Randy and wife Sherry Whitman of Stephenville, and Gary and wife Cindy Whitman of Keller; daughter, Laura Ann and husband Marlin Priddy of Stephenville; grandchildren, Donnie Whitman, Shayla Priddy, Miranda Priddy, Landon Priddy, Corey and wife Teresa Huffman, Mindi Turner, Penny and husband Beau Wilson, and Carrie Basham; great grandchildren, Keely and Bryli Wilson, Carter Huffman, and Trevor Turner; sister, Mary Lynn Ogle of Stephenville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents and wife; Sid was also preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Harris Whitman; and by a brother, Overton Whitman. The Whitman family wishes expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the American Legion Post 240, or the Stephenville First United Methodist Church.
