October 4, 1918 — June 16, 2016

Minnie Josephine Basore Harrison October 4, 1918-June 16, 2016 Minnie Josephine Harrison left this world June 16th, 2016, to live eternally with her Lord and Savior. She was born October 4th, 1918, in Berryville, Arkansas to Harry Harrison Basore, Sr. and Minnie Etta Boatright and was the youngest of their children. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe M. Harrison; three brothers; and three sisters. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 24th, from 6 to 8 pm at Stephenville Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Saturday, June 25th at 10 am at Erath County Cowboy Church. Burial will follow the services at Johnsville Cemetery in Erath County. Mom, is survived by her children, Doug Harrison and wife Toby, Donnie, Debbie Mills and Husband Jay, Mary McCoy and husband D.L.; seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. Mom began her life in the hills of Arkansas that she loved so much. It was there she learned her love of gardening; if she put something in the ground or a pot it flourished. No matter where we lived she grew a garden and fed her family will from it. As a teenager, Mom worked her way through high school at the School of the Ozarks. She would awake at 3 am to bake bread for the schools breakfast which began by her ringing the school bell. After graduating from the School of the Ozarks she enrolled in the nursing program at Saint Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, MO. While attending nursing school, her two sisters would each send her five dollars a month to help pay for school, and in those days five dollars was a lot of money. She graduated in 1940 with her Registered Nursing Degree. She then began her career at an Indian Reservation Hospital in the Kiamichi Mountains of Oklahoma, where she cared for tuberculosis patients. During her long career, she worked in many areas of nursing. She was the first RN to be hired for the evening shift at the Stephenville Hospital in 1959. She was loved and respected by all for her compassion and skills as a nurse. Her daughter and a granddaughter became nurses because of the example that she set. Mom and Dad, also known as MeeMaw and PeePaw, were both servants of the Lord. This could not be more evident than by their providential meeting as volunteers to help in the devastated town of Pryor, Oklahoma when it was hit by a tornado on April 28th, 1942. MeeMaw dedicated her nursing skills and PeePaw drove the ambulance. When the rescues were over, PeePaw gave MeeMaw a ride home and in a little over a month, on June 2nd, 1942 they were married in Berryville, Arkansas, in a little church that still stands today. What began in the ruins of that fated Oklahoma town, sprung the life that would begin our families' story. As MeeMaw always said, "I love you like ‘Ole rags a tearin'".
