Mary Modesta (Stokes) Portwood

On Saturday morning July 6, 2024, Mary Modesta Portwood peacefully passed away at the age of 91.  Graveside services will be held Friday, July 12 at 10:00 AM at Erath Gardens of Memory in Stephenville, Texas.  Visitation will be at Stephenville Funeral Home on Friday morning beginning at 8:30 AM until 9:30 AM.

Modesta was born on July 5, 1933 in Fort Worth Texas to Lone and Jewel Stokes. She married Kenneth W. Portwood in 1950 and they settled in Azle when Kenneth returned from war in Korea.  She worked as head of accounting at Mid-Continent Oil Supply for 30 years.  She later volunteered as travel companion to Miss Texas for several years.

Modesta loved people and cooking.  Many will remember great times spent at Eagle Mountain Lake holiday celebrations, she always made everyone feel welcome.  Her humor and infectious laugh lightened the lives of everyone she met.

Modesta was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother L.B. Stokes.

She is survived by her son Mike Portwood of Vernon, Texas, several cousins and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Stephenville.
