Jimmie "Grandpa Sam" Monroe Green Jr.

Jimmie Monroe Green, Jr. ran into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 10, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many, and his presence here will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Jimmie, known by his family as Grandpa Sam, was born on September 5, 1936 in Fort Worth, Texas. He spent his formative years in Stephenville, where he graduated from Stephenville High School. When he was 24, he married Carolyn Bills, his wife of more than 63 years, with whom he shared three sons.

Jimmie played lead guitar for Stephenville Country Opry for 30 years, where he occasionally sang, as well. He played with Johnny Duncan in the 1950s and for the World Gymnastics event held in the Fort Worth Convention Center. His original song, Shirley and Squirrely, made the national charts in the U.S. and was a great hit in Europe and Japan. He traveled to Nashville twice to play backup on several studio albums. He was known as Stephenville’s own Chet Atkins.

In addition to being a master musician, he was a jack-of-all trades. He worked for Higginbotham’s as a furniture salesman and carpet installer. He and Carolyn also delivered the Fort Worth Star Telegram for 27 years. But his favorite job was helping Carolyn care for their grandchildren and many other children in their home. He was the chauffeur for his grandson Nick, picking him up from school every day until Nick graduated.

In his free time, Jimmie enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved predator hunting, and spent many hours calling up coyotes, foxes, bobcats, and other animals. He enjoyed reading the Bible and was knowledgeable about scripture. Despite being a quiet man, he enjoyed discussing his faith with anyone who cared to listen.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents Jimmie Monroe Green, Sr. and Alma Hope Green and brother Curtis Green.

He is survived by wife Carolyn Bills Green, sons Ricky Green (Renae), Randy Green (Leslie), and Ronny Green (Diana), grandchildren Hannah Roundtree (Kyle), Nickolaus Green, Emily Love (Troy), Taylor McMullen (Aaron), Jayci Jones (Max), Skylar Bennie (Albert), Rheagen Russell, Charis Williamson (Nate), Foster Brumbaugh (Sierra), sister Irene, brother Eddy, Jenny Watts, five great-grandchildren, and many other cherished family and friends.
