Jack Wayne Bailey, 86, of Stephenville, died Friday, May 23, 2008 at Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital. Military Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, May 28 at DFW National Cemetery in Grand Prairie. Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, May 27th at Stephenville Funeral Home. Jack was born August 6, 1921, in Hamlin, Texas to the late Oscar Frank and Katherine Patton Bailey. He joined the Texas Army National Guard in 1935, and was mobilized in November 1940. His unit left Pearl Harbor, December 6, 1941, and was captured by the Japanese in Burma, March 8, 1942. He spent three and a half years as a P. O. W., and helped build the ‘Bridge on the River Kwai' (Salween River). He was a member of the Methodist Church, a Mason, and a member of the VFW. He has lived the past five years in Stephenville; moving here from Shawnee, Oklahoma. He was a retired United States Postal Clerk. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Fran Bailey of Stephenville; daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Bob Sternberg of Tecumseh, OK; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Ann Bailey of Yorba Linda, CA; grandchildren, Jennefer and husband Joe Ambrose, Julie Pressley, Phillip Bailey, Shawnalee Bailey, R. J. Sternberg, Steven Sternberg, and Jennifer Melter; several great grandchildren; and by a sister-in-law, Nell Bailey of Mustang, OK He was preceded in death by his wife, Maida French Bailey, January 28, 2003.
