Gerald was born July 14, 1942, in Dallas, Texas to LP and Evelyn Hammond. He was a fourth-generation peanut farmer and cattle rancher in Desdemona, Texas. After working on his family farm, he moved to Brownwood, Texas in the early 1990’s where he soon became Brown County’s Road and Bridge Foreman, he retired in 2016. In his new life in Brownwood, he met his wife, Clara Young, at a garage sale she was hosting. The two then were married on December 27th, 1998, and were married for 23 years.
Gerald, or to most, Dad, Daddy, Daddio, Gerald P., G-Pa, Papa, Pops or Pepaw, was a Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great and Great-Great Grandfather. He was a kind soul and never missed an opportunity to make people laugh. He was most commonly recognized by his starched jeans, pearl snap shirt, and the endearing smile he often showed as he cracked a joke. Gerald enjoyed his Friday Night Fish Fry’s, playing dominos, and traveling in his RV with Clara, and his family.
In this time of sadness and grief, we can rejoice that he is no longer in pain and we will see him again when our time is due. In the meantime, we can remember his spirit through the memories and stories we all hold dear. We can find peace in one another in knowing how much Gerald P. Hammond meant to all of us.
