He became an expert on heavy machinery, and loved working on the big equipment. When his mother's eyesight became too bad for her to live alone, he returned to the farm in Erath County and raised cattle, goats, and hay. He also worked for Erath County for several years. Fred followed in his father's footsteps by traveling and working in interesting places and in the oilfields. He said that he had had a good and satisfying life with friends made and kept wherever he was. Because he treated everyone right, he was well respected.
