Frances Meek

January 15, 1934 — March 11, 2011

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Frances McCullough Meek announce her passing from this life on Friday, March 11, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 16th at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Indian Creek Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, prior to services. Frances was born on January 15, 1934 in Hico, Texas to Hugh E. McCullough and Lucile Frizzell McCullough. She attended Hico public schools and graduated 2 years early to attend the University of Texas, where she studied archeology and geology. There she also became ROTC Sweetheart and Honorary Cadet Captain and met her husband to be, Ben F. Meek, Jr. They were married 58 years. Fran was active in numerous organizations during her life, including the Chi Omega sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Mayflower Society. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Pecos, where she taught Sunday School and numerous bible studies, participated in Women's Missionary Union, the sanctuary choir, and prayer groups. She was a member of the Twentieth Century Club of Pecos and the West of the Pecos Porcelain Arts Club, served on the Board of Directors of the West of the Pecos Museum, and was appointed to the Texas State Historical Survey Committee of the Permian Basin Museum from 1971-72. She was a member of the American Society of Composers Arrangers and Producers, and was a published author and composer. Fran was active in the civic life of Pecos and served along with husband Ben as a producer of the Golden Girl of the Old West Pageant for 19 years, teaching young women to have confidence and poise. Fran was an accomplished singer and musician and raised her three children in a home full of music. They were blessed to be able to sing to her during several days of her last illness. Family holidays together were happy and blessed occasions full of music, laughter, and great joy because of her. She loved to fly and stopped just short of qualifying for her pilot's license, and hugely enjoyed an aerobatic joy ride in a World War II era P-51 Mustang fighter plane some years ago. A favorite family photo depicts her in the cockpit of a fighter plane wearing helmet, goggles, and mask, giving thumbs up. She leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Ben F. Meek, Jr.; daughters, Sarah Dynis and Mary Ella Cummings and sons-in-law, Nick Dynis and Thomas L. Cummings III; son, Ben F. Meek III and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Foster; grandsons, Christopher Bullock and Zachary Bullock; granddaughter, Anna Cochran and husband Josh Cochran; and great granddaughters, Claire and Julianna Cochran. Her extended family includes Deana Harrell and husband Michael and their daughter, Landry; Kelly Dynis; beloved friend, Lulpe Baeza, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. We celebrate her well-lived life, the great love she gave us, the joy of her salvation, and the knowledge that we will be with her again.
