Elwood A. Knox

Elwood A. Knox, 89, of Stephenville, died Monday, July 28, 2014 in Fort Worth. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 2nd at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel, with Buddy Wells officiating. Burial will follow at West End Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. Elwood was born in Stephenville, Texas on February 11, 1925. He was the only son and third child of the late Mable Hancock Knox Bellomy and Alger G. Knox. He attended school at Smith Springs, Stephenville Public schools and Tarleton College. He served with the 70th infantry division in France and Germany during WWII. After the war he served with the U. S. Information Control Command recording the War Crimes Trials at Nuremburg, Germany. Elwood served as Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff R. E. (Budge) George, and later with the Department of Public Safety Communications Division at Harlingen and Abilene, Texas. He retired after 35 years as a senior property claims adjuster with General Adjustment Bureau, Inc. of New York in their Abilene, Stephenville, and Fort Worth branches, and disasters areas throughout the United States. He was a charter member and one of the original builders of the Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas, and currently was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stephenville. He married Nan Pack, daughter of the late Hugh & Rose Pack of Pigeon Community on December 9, 1942, in Rhome, Texas. Nan preceded him in death on November 12, 1989. He remarried Nellie Fulks, widow of Allen Fulks, on April 24, 1993 in Stephenville. Elwood is survived by his wife, Nellie Louise; son, John A. Knox of Saginaw, TX; daughter, Patricia Ann Baker of Rowlett, TX; grandchildren, Meredith Knox, Jeff Loftin, Craig Loftin, and Kari Ann Fischer; seven great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren; step-children, Rayburn and wife Beverly Fulks of Georgetown, TX, Gary Fulks of Center, TX, Sue Ann and husband Bill Green of Edmond, OK; 4 step grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews including a niece that was like a daughter, Gleda Swink and her husband John of Stephenville. Elwood was also preceded in death by two sisters, Syble Pack and Ernestine Runyon. The Knox family wishes expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Stephenville Public Library, genealogy section.
