Edgar Edgmon

September 7, 1919 — June 21, 2011

Edgar Edgmon, 91, of Denton, formerly of Stephenville, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2011 in Denton. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel with J.K. Minton officiating. Interment will follow at the Lingleville East End Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday at the funeral home. Edgar was born in Bennett, Tx. to Jeff and Ethel Edgmon and they moved while he was a child to Cow Creek in Erath County and later to Lingleville, Tx. where he graduated from high school and spent most of his young adult life. He spent a couple of years in the Ropesville, Tx. area before entering the Army in February, 1942 and was discharged in December 1945. He served his country proudly during World War 2 along with his brother Leonard Edgmon. In December of 1947 he married Emma Sue Campbell and the following year in October, 1948 had a daughter, Carolyn, their only child. They moved from Lingleville to Patillo, Tx. in 1952 and Edgar farmed land and raised cattle and sometimes goats and pigs. He and Sue purchased the Patillo Store and ran it for a short time. He decided he could not make a living for his family by just farming so he went to work for the federal government at Fort Walters Army Base in Mineral Wells, Tx. He retired from there at the age of 55 and continued to raise cattle for many years. The love of his life, Sue, died in June 1996. Sue, as everyone called her, was a native of Erath County being raised in Duffau, Tx. and she and Edgar had almost 49 years together and as the saying goes "through hard times and good times". Edgar, Sue and Carolyn were active in the small Patillo Baptist Church and Edgar served as a deacon and treasurer for many years. He was the oldest living member of Patillo Baptist Church until his death. He served on the Santo School Board for many years and as president. He never missed any event, especially basketball games, that his daughter participated in during her entire 12 years at Santo High School. He also was a member of the DAV - Chapter 234 and VFW in Stephenville, Tx. and also served as the commander. He lived a long and healthy life and will be missed greatly by family and friends. Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff and Ethel Edgmon, one brother Leonard Edgmon, and his wife Sue Edgmon. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Edgmon, niece, Dianna Ray, nephews, Mike Edgmon, James Williams, Coy Williams, George Deerfield and their families. He had many, many friends at Stephenville and drank coffee with many of them at the Bank of America for 12 years and sat at many sale barns watching the price of cattle. He never missed a day reading the newspaper and kept up with the cattle prices and oil prices until he was not longer able. He will be missed by all who knew him; he is now resting in peace with God without any pain.
