Doyle Dean "Digger" Lindsey, 81 of Sapoak, Texas went to be with our Heavenly Father on July 2, 2019 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He went peacefully surrounded by his children at Green Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Richland Hills, Texas.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, July 13 at 10:30 a.m at Stephenville Funeral Home in Stephenville, Texas with a Graveside Memorial Service immediately following at Sapoak Cemetery in Sapoak, Texas. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 12 at Stephenville Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Doyle Dean "Digger" Lindsey was born on March 3, 1938 to Mary Lou Lindsey (nee' Sanders) and Weldon Ray "Pete" Lindsey in Fort Worth, Texas at Harris Hospital. Due to family circumstances, he was later raised by his maternal grandparents, Henry Joshua Sanders a.k.a. "Paw" and Lillie Pearl Sanders a.k.a. "Granny" on various cattle ranches between Cresson, Texas and Millsap, Texas. He graduated from Godley High School in 1957. In 1960, he married Harriett Wade of Cleburne, Texas and they went on to have three sons. He graduated from mortuary school at Dallas Institute - Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science and obtained a degree in Mortuary Science and spent approximately 6 years as a mortician at Thompson's Harveson and Cole Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1966, Doyle joined the Fort Worth Fire Department where his buddies pinned him with the nickname "Digger" upon finding out his previous career was mortuary work. He served on the Fort Worth Fire Department for 34 years where he impacted many lives in the line of duty. He retired from the Fort Worth Fire Department in the year 2000. In his retirement years, "Digger" settled on his small ranch in Sapoak, Texas and married Loy Welch originally of Brady, Texas in the year 2000. They lived out their lives together in Sapoak proud of their children and grandchildren while keeping each other company.
"Digger" was well respected by his fellow firefighters and known to be a tenacious teammate who acted fearlessly on Fire and EMS calls in Fort Worth. In his high school years, he was a two-time Texas State High School Rodeo Champion in 1956 and 1957 thanks to the teaching of his late grandfather, "Paw". "Digger" was a member of and ordained elder at Trinity Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas. He was also a member of Southside Masonic Lodge No. 1114 A.F. & A.M. since 1967. He was an accomplished man of simple means.
"Digger" is preceded in death by his loving wife, Loy; parents Weldon Ray "Pete" Lindsey and Mary Lou Lindsey (nee' Sanders) and his maternal grandparents who raised him, Henry Joshua Sanders and Lille Pearl Sanders. He is survived by two sisters, Theda Lindsey of Cleburne and Cindy Allcock (husband, James) of Collinsville, Texas. He is survived by three sons: Doyle Dean Lindsey, Jr. of Pennsylvania, Donavan Todd Lindsey of Fort Worth, and Christopher Kent Lindsey (wife, Rebecca) of Fort Worth. Grandchildren: Ryan Anthony Lindsey of Ohio, Brandon Richard Lindsey of Ohio, and Camryn Brooke Lindsey of Fort Worth. He also loved his 6 stepchildren and step grandchildren as his own who also survive him.
