Carmelo Cobas Sr.

Carmelo was born July 16, 1942 in Las Villa, Cuba to Juan Cobas and Caridad Olivera. He went to be with the Lord in the early hours of September 5, 2021 at the age of 79.

Funeral services for Carmelo will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, September 10th at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow at East Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, at Stephenville Funeral Home

He was the oldest of three children and helped to provide for his family by working at his first job at the age of 9. His work in Cuba included a job working as a chauffeur for dignitaries and a construction worker building dams and other infrastructure.

He married his true love, Margarita Perez on October 18, 1977 in Havana. Their first child, Carmelo Cobas Jr. was born to them in Havana on November 1, 1978. While witnessing the cruelty and devastation that communism brought to his beloved Cuba, Carmelo worked tirelessly to bring his young family, along with his mother and siblings to the safety and freedom of America on May 26, 1980. After arriving in America, Carmelo and his family embraced the American way of life, and in time, all became citizens.

Carmelo and Margarita’s second child, Laudelina Cobas was born to them on June 16, 1982 in Miami. Carmelo and his family moved between Florida and Texas over the next several years, working construction and oil fields to provide for his family. They settled in Stephenville and raised their family in this loving community.

Carmelo instilled in his family Christian values and a love for the Lord. He always made sure that they were involved in church activities and attended regularly. His love for the Lord and his family sustained him, even in his final days.

He delighted in his children and granddaughter, Eden, and always lit up when they came to visit. They always brought smiles and laughter, even to the point of his nursing home roommate recently declaring, “why are they so noisy!”. Laughter and smiles were a hallmark of Carmelo’s family life.

Carmelo was preceded in death by his parents and both siblings. He is survived by his loving wife Margarita, both children and their families.
